Baking Day

Way back when I was a student (ok, so I only graduated three years ago, but I feel so old now at 24) I used to spend a lot of my free time baking. Mostly biscuits and cookies and making the odd thing I wanted to take a photograph of like Hello Kitty pancakes and rainbow jelly in glasses, but the thing is, since I got a job I just haven't had the time to do any of this anymore. I work all weekend and generally pick up two or three extra late night shifts during the week so I don't get to spend much time with my fiancé now so we spend most of our time together out or planning our holidays etc but now that the weather is getting colder we've started baking a little again and spending more time indoors.

Mind you, we're being pretty lazy while we get back into baking. Here's the kits that my fiancé picked up.

We decided to start with the Tom & Jerry cupcakes, because they're my childhood favourite, although i'm pretty devastated that the sponge isn't pink anymore but on the plus side that strawberry flavoured icing is still as amazing as it used to be
.

Our kitchen is very impractical, which is why we've gone for cakes, and cakes that come in kits at that for the time being as we only have a very small amount of work space (if you see the first photograph, we have maybe 3 more inches of work space not in that photograph and thats it). We're looking into getting a new kitchen somewhere in the next few years (we're considering quite a few options, the house needs a fair bit of work before we start on the kitchen then we want to look at either selling it or renting it out and moving or having an extension built on top of the garage and out a bit into the back garden as long as we can get the permission to move the manhole) and I've already picked quite a few I like and the matching American style fridge freezer to go with it! and i've had my oven picked out for years - currently we have our oven built up into the wall (I practically have to stand on my toes to turn the dials! but on the plus side, I Googled the brand because we'd never heard of it and it turned out to be a commercial catering company so I think we've got a pretty good oven for the time being) but if we can I want to take that section out and either turn it into a cupboard or just extend the work space and have a cupboard above it (our house is very impractical, I don''t know how people survive with no cupboards!). The lighting in the kitchen is very bad too, even after we cut down the trees so I want to add a new bit of lighting in above the work surface, like an extra light that you can turn on/off when you need it not part of the general room lighting - thats why these photographs are all pretty shadowy and dull and taken on my iPhone, you can't take a photograph in there with a DSLR unless you're using a tripod or flash!.

Ok i'm going to end that here and maybe i'll write a full house based post in the future.

We used our oven for these cakes but last year for Valentines day my fiancé got me a cupcake maker from Lakeland and I still haven't had a chance to try that out so I think we'll use that next time round and I might write a little review on here for you all once I finally use it.

I'm getting excited for the holiday season now - although it means i'll be at work more! - because I just can't wait to make gingerbread men and a gingerbread house, we've also got the chocolate Christmas cottage kit that we've never used and last year I got a new set of Christmas cookie cutters
but never got the chance to use them so fingers crossed this year we get the time to do a lot of baking because i'm already pretty well organised on the gift front!
