Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows Review

Back on Tuesday night my fiancé and I went to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows at the Empire Cinema in Newcastle. We usually go to the one in Sunderland but due to the 2D timings being bad at Sunderland (glasses + 3D glasses don't go well together!) I met my fiancé in Newcastle when he finished work.

Here is his review:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

Rachel and I went to see this movie in Newcastle at Empire at The Gate. Never go there, it's awful, kids in Newcastle kick your chairs and scream at their parents all the way through movies and it just isn't as good as Empire in Sunderland.

Moving on, this movie was fun. We start off with April investigating a (mad) scientist named Baxter Stockman, and using a device Donatello (my favourite Teenage Mutant Hero* Turtle when I was little) has given her, eventually manages to hack his emails and discover he's working with Shredder. Also, conveniently, Shredder (who does not work for Shredded Wheat but try telling a 6 year old me that) is being moved prisons that night.

Cut to Shredder being loaded into a transport truck with humans Bebop and Sheamus… sorry Rocksteady, chase scene as the footclan set about breaking Shredder out, which ultimately ends up with Shredder being teleported and Bebop and a Rocksteady escaping.

Shredder ends up in the presence of Krang, who looks a lot more slimy than I remember, who tells him that the teleportation device that he has is part of a bigger device which can be used to open a portal to transport his ship bit by bit through to Earth and dominate the planet. He then gives him some stuff to create mutants.

Shredder then recruits Bebop and Rocksteady and turns them into a warthog and rhino, and sets about finding the other two pieces of the device, which he does and opens the portal, only to be betrayed by Krang who then ends up eventually being defeated by the turtles, sending his ship back through the portal just before it closes.

In between all this there's plenty of side-stories and internal conflict to keep it interesting. If you're a turtles fan, definitely go and watch it if just for the appearance of Krang. I especially liked Shredder double-crossing Baxter and then literally minutes later, being double-crossed by Krang…

*in the UK, the turtles cartoon was called Hero turtles because somebody thought the word ninja was a bit too tough for our delicate British brains.

Just an add on about the cinema experience - there was a guy in our seat, he didn't really seem to speak English so we just moved to the next one and would have got him to move if someone else was booked into the other seat we took. He spoke sort of quietly to his two young brothers/sons, possibly explaining whats happening as again, not sure if they spoke English, which was fine, it was quiet and it was letting them know what was happening in the movie. But then he answered the phone and had a phone call!
Other than that, if you book your seats online for the Newcastle Empire they force you to sit in the premium seats - they may be more comfortable, but they're pretty far back and I prefer to sit closer being as blind as I am.
