Spider-Man Homecoming Review

We never got around to writing a review for Transformers, so here is my fiancé's review of Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man: Homecoming is the return of Spider-Man to the MCU and, obviously aware of the fact that nobody can sit through another traumatic Uncle Ben dying scene, is a bit of a rewrite of the character.

So we start off in the aftermath of the first Avengers movie, introducing our main antagonists being effectively fired from the city cleanup job, stealing some alien technology by "forgetting to turn it in" and deciding to get revenge on the rich people, Stark etc, who "made the mess and now get paid to clean it up."

We then get a recap of the events in the Captain America: Civil War movie from the eyes of Peter Parker, who'd been keeping a video diary.

This is a movie about growing up and figuring out what your role is in society, for Peter he strives to be one of the Avengers but, at 15, isn't old enough or mature enough for that responsibility yet.

An example of this is when he, with the help of his friend Ned, removes the tracking device from the super-powered suit that Tony gave him, then Ned discovers it's in "training" mode and Peter persuades him to bypass training mode, giving him access to the full capabilities of the suit.

Peter is trying his hardest to make a good impression and being ignored by Happy / Tony Is making him feel like he needs to do more to impress and make them notice him, he tries to do the right thing but ends up hideously out of his depth, barely surviving or ending up being saved by Iron Man. Eventually he messes up so bad that Tony Stark takes his spider-suit back, leaving Peter feeling powerless.

Of course, the climatic battle occurs with Peter wearing his old basic suit and he proved himself worthy, even getting invited to join the Avengers, which he turns down thinking it was a test.

When he gets home, he finds a bag with the suit in from Tony, which he puts on just as Aunt May comes into the room, looks at him and shouts "what the f…"

As far as Spider-Man movies go, this feels like a total refit, as if the other Spider-Man movies happened in a different universe, and that everything you already know about Spider-Man needs to be forgotten in order to make it work. That being said, in order to fit into the grand scheme of things, o think these changes needed to be made otherwise they'd just be making another standalone Spider-Man reboot movie which people will be sick to death of.

There's a good reference to Toby Maguire's upside-down kissing scene in this movie, you can't miss it. There's also a little shock MJ reveal, although her name has changed which I'm not sure how I feel about.

Overall I'd give it 3/5. It's worth watching, but feels like an introduction movie we didn't need to a character who has been rebooted so much. It might have been better to not have a standalone movie and stick the character into some other Avengers-related movies, we already know who Spider-Man is and his back story so why change it so much, so many times?
