Movie Review: Wonder Woman

We saw Wonder Woman on Saturday night, here is my fiancé's review.

Wonder Woman Wonder Woman is set at the end of WW1, but it is not just another war movie. We start off with our protagonist Diana as a child, watching the Amazonians training to fight and wanting to be involved, but the Queen, her mother, is extremely reluctant to say the least. She learns the stories of Zeus and Ares, the God of War, and how her mother cast her from clay and Zeus gave her life. In ancient times, Ares grew jealous of man, whom Zeus created so that the Gods may have somebody to rule over. Ares corrupted man and killed the rest of the Gods, until Zeus stopped him and subdued him. A few years later, Diana is training and witnessed a mans plane crashing, so she dives into the sea to rescue him. The Germans quickly follow through and begin battling the Amazonians, with the man she rescued joining in helping them. Diana learns from the man, who reveals himself to be a British spy named Steve Trevor, that there is a "Great War" taking place, and she is convinced that it is Ares, so she leaves with Steve and they go to end the war. Of course it's not that simple and her misunderstanding of the outside world causes a lot of humour at the start, which is quickly replaced by a lot of really good action sequences, featuring that slo-mo stop/start "wait until you see what she can do" sequences which are so prevalent in modern action movies. Of course, there's a massive twist when she finally has the showdown with Ares which caught everybody by surprise. I was expecting a twist because the path it was taking was too obvious but I was expecting a different twist. The twist is really well done and the final battle is totally different to every action sequence prior to it in the movie, which is refreshing to see when so many of these movies follow the same pattern. So you know how it goes because WW1 ended but in this movie it's not the outcome, more the journey there and it is a great journey. One thing which I will say is that in the end, Ares reminded me a lot of The X-Men's Magneto, not that that's bad thing. I'd give it 4 / 5, it's a brilliant movie but lacks something in the last 1/3, but it's not for lack of effort
