Star Wars Force Awakens Review

As always, I left my fiancé in charge of the review writing.

Firstly I am trying to keep this as free from spoilers as I can so it might seem a little jittery. I have a few problems with the movie which I don’t want to leave out if I am honest so I am just gonna put them out there and if I spoil the movie I apologise relentlessly.

Firstly, This movie was good, there is no denying that. I don’t want to spend the whole time bashing the movie because I did enjoy most of it. There were some parts which seemed very lazy, a lot of nod-backs and references to the original movies which I think maybe for this movie were ok but if they continually happen in the next two movies they’ll get old very quickly, much like the characters from the original movies! The action scenes were turned up a notch, a lot more tension in some scenes which was well balanced with the humour of some other scenes.

So, what didn’t I like? Well, I’m gonna talk about Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber. Originally I thought “Luke’s lightsaber from Return of the Jedi is green” but then found out that this lightsaber is the original one he lost when Vader cut off his hand, the one which was Anakin’s. So… Where did it come from and who found it? Also, I suppose it is nice to want return Anakin’s lightsaber to his son but really, why would he need it? He has one he built himself and since he is a Jedi he is supposed to not really have any emotions or attachment.

The next thing I didn’t like was that we saw Luke over three movies slowly develop skills with years of training and practice, eventually getting good enough to beat Vader, then now Rey comes along and over the course of a few hours goes from having absolutely no control of the Force to being able to use mind control and overpower people in lightsaber duels? Come on… I’d say if she is able to do all of this in the first movie, over the next few she will develop the power to move whole planets using the Force and basically defeat people by looking at them sternly and pulling the Force from their body.

These two points do not actually take away from the movie, infact, without them there would be no movie. I also think that the awareness that fans would not want to see another three movies of subtle improvements in a character played a factor in the decision to rapidly develop Rey’s skills over a few scenes.

Overall, I’d give it a 4 out of 5, it’s good but it was never ever going to be good enough without George Lucas writing it and George Lucas’ plans for the series were absolute rubbish from a fan perspective so this is as good as it is gonna get. I hope from now the movies move forward and don’t rely as heavily on the old movies for inspiration as much as this one did.
