Movie Review: Thor - Ragnarok

My fiancé and I went to the cinema last night for the first time since we saw Cars 3 in July!

Here is his review of Thor: Ragnarok.

The third instalment in Thor’s corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe starts off with Thor finding himself in a bit of a predicament, caged and chained by Surtur, the fire demon. It transpires that this was all a ruse to get information and he quickly breaks his chains, “destroys” Surtur, steals his crown and brings it back to Asgard, where Loki has fooled everybody into believing that he is Odin. Thor, however, has been told by Surtur that Odin is not on Asgard and sees straight through the ruse, leading to them briefly visiting earth and encountering Dr. Strange and then meeting Odin who promptly dies. This all seems like spoilers but… it’s not. Thor’s sister Hela then returns from banishment and destroys Mjölnir with her hand. Loki screams to return to Asgard, leading to them being transported, with Hela who sends Thor and Loki out of the bifrost mid-transit, before swiftly taking over Asgard. Thor ends up imprisoned on Sakaar, forced to fight in the Contest of Champions for the Grand Master. He decides to fight the Grand Master’s champion, who is revealed to be The Hulk. After the battle, there are a number of numerous exchanges between various different characters (including a brief, blink and you’ll miss it appearance of Kang the Conquerer, seemingly in a nod to the Contest of Champions mobile game) which culminates in the formation of “the Revengers” to tackle Hela. We all know how this ends. Thor thinks he is nothing without Mjölnir, has a vision, Odin says “are you the God of Hammers?” Thor realises his powers are strong and fights Hela again, this time with more gusto. But it’s no use. She’s too strong, and Thor realises that they weren’t supposed to prevent Ragnarök, rather they were supposed to ensure it happened, so he sent Loki to drop Surtur’s crown in the eternal flame, fulfilling the prophecy. I also think Loki might have stolen the Tesseract, which will undoubtedly backfire in the third Avengers movie, (Infinity Wars) leading to it ending up in Thanos’ hands. Asgard is destroyed, Thor, Hulk, Loki and the Asgardians are all travelling to Earth to re-settle in Norway, driving the MCU on towards Infinity Wars… especially when they encounter Thanos’ gigantic ship when they’re travelling in the mid-credits scene.
